Blog Hop Question of the week -

QUESTION: Genres- What two do you think mix together best?

Since I write romance -  romance/mystery and romance/paranormal (mostly ghosts) I have to say those two mix very well together.
Mine are romance with mystery undertones or paranormal undertones. The main part of the story is the romance.
I also write contemorary romance.  I enjoy mixing the two genres.  So I guess I'd have to say those are the two that mix together best.
On the other hand, I know authors who write romance fantasy and although I've not read them, I'd have to say they're probably a pretty good mix too.
Going away from the romance genre - I've heard of scifi/mystery and fantasy/mystery. I think well done any of them can be the best mix. There's no limit to genres that mix together well if the writer can create them.

I guess I pretty much like all romance.

Yes, you definitely emphasized romance in Stranger on the Shore with an element of mystery. Great read!

Thanks, J.Q. but I wouldn't call it a real mystery. I mean let's face it all stories are a bit of a mystery because the reader doesn't know what happens next, even in mainstream fiction. If we knew what happened next, we'd quit reading. My next book, Double the Trouble (release date in May) is more of a mystery romance.

Intriguing question, Roseanne. There are a number of genres that work well together. I'd begun my writing career with mainstream works, but after writing a psychological suspense book, turned to romance. At first I concentrated on romantic comedy because it came easy to me and was a lot of fun to write. Then I turned to romantic suspense.
Now I'm into full-fledged mystery writing but I find that my romantic background comes out in it as well. So I guess my choice would be to combine mystery with romance.

I love a good paranormal romance. There's something moving about an impossible love affair that somehow works.

I do mostly speculative fiction, Science Fiction and Fantasy, and sometimes I just can't keep the two apart.

My book "Magic Is Faster Than Light," due out from Muse at the end of April, is a prime example. "Once upon a time there was a spaceship full of witches ..." and the various uses of magic to facilitate space travel was a lot of fun to write.

Another example is my short story "Sorceress" which should appear in the April issue of "The Lorelei Signal." A physicist, Curly Jones, is dumped by a wormhole experiment that goes awry into a world where magic works.

A WIP titled "Cop with a Wand" turned out as a sort of "Paranormal Police Procedural," another interesting mix. I really don't do romances, so I can't say right now how that would work, but if I ever do try it, I'll give odds that one of the romantic couple will turn out to be something other than a normal human ...

I find it interesting that most authors find their niche and stay there. Me, I'm a western historical romance gal, but I have dabbled in romantic suspense, contemporary, chick lit, and medical romance. I love them all, but my passion is in the old west. You, my dear, write books I love to read.

Thanks, Pat. I'm going to have to put some of your books on my to buy list. I love a good mystery.

Actually, I've also written a Woman's Fiction - can't really be classified as romance. I do like to use the older hero/heroine sometimes too. Just because we're seniors doesn't mean we don't need love and affection.

I love to write across a range of genres, and love to mix them up too. Fantasy romance is one of my favorites.

If you can do it go for it, that is what I say. I am slowly trying to branch out, working on a romance/fantasy right now. We will see how it goes! Great blog!
