Welcome, Kat Holmes

First off I’d like to thank Roseanne Dowell for having me. I am truly thrilled to be here. I want to talk about receiving that first contract. When I submitted The Lighthouse to Muse It Hot Publishing, I had already submitted it elsewhere  but never heard anything back. I assumed they weren’t interested so when I’d heard about a new house opening. I subbed to them.

I wasn’t rejected, but neither was I accepted. The head of the house, Lea Schizas, told me certain things needed to be fixed and once I fixed them she’d give me a contract. I was recovering from emergency surgery and couldn’t fix these items right away. Over the next month, I worked on it.

I resubmitted it on the 3rd of May. The very next day  a contract was waiting for me. I was over the moon. I got up and danced all over the place. The Lighthouse had been contracted and given a release date. This was made even more special because my mom had recently signed a contract with them as well. Actually, not with Muse It Hot but the mainstream line Muse It Up. But it’s still the same house.

The chance to share this experience with her has been amazing. She’s my best friend in the whole world. I read her stuff as she’s writing and she reads mine. She’s been my chief cheerleader. It’s awesome to be writing for the same house together.

And speaking of Muse, the people there are just wonderful. Everyone, from the publisher, Lea, all the way to all the authors, are the most supportive and encouraging people you’d ever want to know. Delilah K. Stephens does amazing covers. I’m in awe of the beauty of her work and how quickly she cranks them out. She’s done two for me so far. Yes I got a second book contracted by Muse. It’s the first in a new series and is called Frozen.

The Lighthouse releases from Muse It Hot Publishing January 01, 2011. It’s an erotic tale of romance, mystery and suspense with a bit of murder and ghostly happenings thrown in. I hope you enjoy The Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse blurb
When Rachel Westmont inherits a lighthouse from an aunt she didn’t even know she had, she’s overjoyed. The news couldn’t have come at a better time. Newly divorced from a self-serving doctor, the change of scenery is just what she needs. So she packs up and leaves California for a little island off the coast of Maine.

Rachel falls in love with both Star Island and the beautiful lighthouse and cottage she’s inherited. But, odd things begin to happen right from the first day. Cold chills permeate the cottage and books fly off the shelves. And someone seems to be playing pranks on her.

But when the ante gets upped and someone tries to kill her, Rachel must turn to hunky local sheriff Craig Lewis for protection. Now bodies are turning up, people are getting hurt, and Rachel is starting to suspect her aunt didn’t die a natural death. Can Craig stop a killer from claiming Rachel as their next victim? A little help from a ghost may be in order.

Frozen Blurb
Brent Larkin came to Antarctica to study penguins. He didn’t come looking for either adventure or romance. But when a freak storm blows in and he loses his way, that’s exactly what he gets. Attacked by some bobbing lights, he suddenly finds himself in a wintry forest surrounded by men with swords pointed at him. The next thing he knows he’s in a dungeon and chained to the wall.

Awni is the queen of Artica, a land of eternal winter. The daughter of a god, Awni’s cursed to never know the touch of another. Her icy skin is death for anyone who dares to touch her flesh. But, when a mysterious stranger shows up in her lands, she finds herself drawn to him. Eager to learn about his world, she invites him to spend time with her only to be shocked when he touches her and doesn’t freeze to death.

But Artica is a land ruled by tradition. Though she longs to keep Brent there with her, the laws of the land force her to send him home. But without him, both she and the land begin to suffer. Now, Awni is facing the same peril as one of her ancestors. And if she perishes like her ancestor did, all of Artica will pay the price. Can Brent, returned to his own world, somehow find his way back and save her before all is lost?

Welcome, John B. Rosenman

Strange Passions

I’d like to thank Roseanne for letting me tell you a little about myself, in particular my writing.

I’ve published nearly twenty books and 350 stories, most in the SF/Fantasy/Horror categories. My four upcoming books with MuseItUp Publishing reflect this focus. I love to create—or to try to create—unique characters who seek romance, fulfillment, and meaning in life against seemingly overwhelmingly odds. I also love mind-stretching concepts concerning the universe and human potential, ideas that make folks say “Wow!”

I hope I succeed at both goals in “More Stately Mansions,” due out in March 2011. (cover by Delilah K. Stephans.) Captain Temple, a 59-year-old failed artist, leads an expedition to an alien planet for possible commercial exploitation. K22 offers shining cities and beautiful scenery, but where the heck are the inhabitants? Why is no one there to meet them, and what terrible secret is this planet hiding? At the same time, does Temple’s desire for a beautiful 22-year-old crew member have any chance of success?

In the end, perhaps a greater romance will prevail. A transcendent romance with the universe. I can’t tell you more, but look closely at Delilah’s masterful cover and watch again the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In my paranormal romance novel, Dark Wizard, scheduled for May 2011, Kan awakes in California with complete amnesia and superhuman strength and the ability to bring back the dead. Who is he, why can’t he remember, how can he do such things, and why does he have to fall completely in love with Ariel Carter when his deepest instincts tell him he is dangerous to her? I like to write romantic adventures where the couple faces apparently insuperable obstacles. In this case, Ariel has a dark secret, too, one that may pose an even greater risk to him.

As if that isn’t enough, soon the aliens arrive, determined to conquer Earth. Only Kan can stop them. Can he do that and keep the girl, too? Or would that destroy them both?

My third tale, “The Blue of Her Hair, The Gold of Her Eyes,” is dark science fiction, slated for July 2011. As with “More Stately Mansions,” I try to play with a really BIG idea here: What if a woman contracted a mysterious and terrible disease that made everyone fear and reject her, including her own husband? What is Rachel Ross’s disease, a horrible disfiguration or something more? What about her strange perceptions and passions? What is she turning into, and can she find a new sense of identity and purpose amid the terror of her transformation?

My last story is a Sci-Fi Romantic Adventure novel coming September 2011, and I try to put

everything in it. Dax Rigby, War Correspondent offers a hot, forbidden romance, a distant, alien

planet, two completely realized alien species, and a hero who is far more than what he knows

and appears. Like Captain Temple, Kan, and Rachel Ross, Dax Rigby experiences strange passions and perceptions, but unlike them, he finds himself on an alien planet 90,000 light-years from Earth where someone constantly tries to kill him. Like Kan, he has the opportunity to save billions of lives, but only if he can solve a unique mystery and conquer the demons within himself.

Here’s hoping visitors to Roseanne’s site visit MuseItUp’s website and acquaint themselves with all our authors. Together, the creative Muser family has much to offer.

Welcome, Lindsay Below

I’m a little bit of what some people might call a nerd. I’ve been a bookworm ever since I could read, and unlike some, I actually liked school. In fact, I loved it. I love to learn, which is why, 9 times out of 10, I would rather be watching the Discovery Channel or the History Channel than the newest craze on TV.

That’s partly why my young adult novel , Lurkers, was such fun for me to write. I got to incorporate real science into the plot line. While I’m nowhere near as good with science as one of the main characters, Jackson, I still enjoy learning about it, and even extrapolating known scientific theorems to create the backbone of my plot.

While I loved science in high school, it was never my best subject (that would be English). Luckily, after leaving high school, I maintained a good friendship with my high school science teacher, Andy Rorabeck (find him online here: http://ajrorabeck.wordpress.com). In fact, we even formed a writer’s group which we called Exarare -- Latin, meaning: to till, cultivate, or plough; to write; or to flog severely. Although I’ve moved away from the quiet rural town where I grew up I still continue to contribute to the group through email instead of in person.

Now that I’ve set down my confession in writing, who else is a closet nerd?

Excerpt from Lurkers (unedited), available July 2011 from MuseItUp Publishing:

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw something move, a shadow. She turned her head. More shadows loomed in the darkness. They were definitely people. “Shit!” she swore. “The gang!”

Jackson immediately stepped out of the way. “Inside!” he shouted. “Quickly!”

Kayla pushed Josh inside and stumbled in after him. Morris shoved his way in before Jackson could close the door. He pushed it closed behind him, and Jackson locked it. “There,” he sighed. “Better.” He inserted another key into the light switch beside the door, and flicked on the lights overhead.

“There’s not another door, is there?” Kayla asked, gnawing on her lip. The gang was huddled together, conspiring.

“Not one that’s open,” Jackson grinned. He clapped a hand to Josh’s shoulder and looked her in the eye. “Come on. We need to work quickly.” He scowled at his cousin. “You can stay here. Or better yet, go back outside.”

“Look, I’m--”

“Sorry?” Jackson sniped. “That’s all you seem to be saying lately. Too little, too late, Morris. And don’t bring up the insulin.”

Morris walked along side him as they crossed the entryway to one of the labs. She could still see the door from here. The gang wasn’t going away. If anything, they were coming closer. “Can’t I--”

“Shut up.”

“Jackson,” Kayla whispered. “They’re not going away. Are you sure they can’t get in?”

“Positive.”

She heard a smash in the other room, and looked through the doorway. One gang member pushed out the glass with the butt of his baseball bat. “They’re in!” she shrieked. Jackson flipped through the pages of the notebook he’d snagged off the shelf. Kayla backed up into the room and shut the door. She didn’t realize that Morris was on the other side of it until he started pounding on it. “Why do they have to make doors out of glass?” she lamented to the ceiling. “Honestly, why do they do that?”

“I found something!” Jackson exclaimed. He stood on the balls of his feet as he scanned the book so fast she could barely follow them. “Hold them off!” he called without looking up.

“Let me in!” Morris called from the other side of the door. He pushed on it, but she dug her feet into the ground, shoving with all her might. “Kayla, come on, please let me in! Don’t leave me out here with them!”

“It’s what you did to us!” she yelled back.

“I said I was sorry about that. Please!”

Kayla ignored him, and glanced at the window of the room. “This isn’t going to hold them for long!” she said to Jackson. “They’ll only break the window. What do we do?”

He glanced up from the book. His mouth was a grim line. “I know something that will hold them off, but you need to be careful with it.”

“Jackson! They’re inside the building, please!”

Jackson scowled. “And you might as well let him in, too. He won’t shut up.”

Kayla stepped aside from the door, and Morris burst in. Jackson glared at him. “Sit over there with Josh, and don’t say a word, or I swear to God--”

“You got it, cuz,” Morris said quickly.

Kayla peeked through the door herself. It was like Morris said; almost all of the gang members were inside. The leader was just stepping over the glass. They were stopping to regroup and wait for her orders. Kayla turned back to Jackson. She probably matched the walls for pallor. “We don’t have a lot of time.”

Jackson nodded and dashed to the cabinet. He fumbled to get the lock open and threw it away. Finding five small flasks, he spilled some liquids in them. He stuffed wads of cloth into the tops, sealing them. Then he grabbed a Bunsen burner and fitted it to a nozzle, twisting the tap. He groped with the matchbook, trying to get one lit, until Morris called his name and tossed him a lighter. He touched the flame to the burner. Blue flames shot out the top. He looked Kayla in the eye.

“Light the Erlenmeyer--”

“Light the what?”

“The flask! Light the flask and throw it out, but don’t throw it too close to them. It shouldn’t make a big explosion, but it’ll be loud. Wait until they start forward again before you throw another one. These are all we have.”

Kayla grabbed the first one. She peeked out the door before she lit it, trying to gauge how close the gang was. They still hadn’t started past the mouth of the entry, but they stirred like they were planning to at any second. She lit the cloth on the fire, and tossed it gently out into the larger hall. From the arc, it would land about six feet or so from the gang. She shut the door.

The explosion blew out the glass in the window. She winced, her ears ringing, and looked around for Josh. He was behind Morris, on the other side of the room. He was safe. She sighed and rubbed her ears. Jackson unplugged his ears, scowling. “Well, don’t throw it too close to us, either!” he called. He thundered, “DON’T TOUCH THAT!” as Josh closed his hand around one of the flasks.

“Stay in the corner!” Kayla screamed at her brother. He glowered at her, and she looked at Morris. “Keep him there!” Morris snagged him and dragged him away from the ruckus.

She lit another flask and threw it out through the window. This time it landed three feet from the gang. She plugged her ears as she turned away, but not quite in time. Her vision swam, the blast was so loud. She was afraid it would blow out her eardrums. She crouched behind the lab counter for a minute, panting, before she stood and peeked through the window. The gang was milling away in confusion. Sighing in relief, she slumped against the counter.

Jackson’s eyes were glued to the page in front of him. With each line he read, he seemed to push himself higher on the balls of his feet. He jiggled his ear absently, trying to get his hearing back. Then, he stopped, dropped back down onto his feet, and pressed his nose close to the page. He straightened, pointing to it. “There it is! I’ve got it!” His lips moved as he memorized the wording.

Then the lights went out.

Welcome, David J. Normoyle

Games of Thrones - a tribute.

Thanks for hosting me, Roseanne. I want to talk about my favourite book today.

It's Game of Thrones, the first book in the George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire
and Ice Series.

We enter a world with a host of breathtakingly original characters. Each one has
their own motivations, desires and flaws. Usually in books, you know that the
good guys will survive despite the dangerous situations they get themselves
into, but not here. No one is safe; anyone can die at any time. We don't even
know who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are. Everyone is a shade of
grey. Characters who you haven't figured out are good or bad do things which you
aren't sure are right or wrong.

Their world is a medieval one with fantasy elements. It's a large interesting
place, with kingdoms and fiefdoms, cities and mountains. The characters traverse
it: plotting, fighting, escaping, living, dying. It's an adult world, not
sanitised, with sex, cursing, war, incest, death. It's not easy to make the best
decision even for the most noble characters, as every choice has uncertain
ramifications. They have to throw the dice, with their lives and often thousands
of other lives on a knife edge.

Every chapters forms a short story with a distinct beginning, middle and end.

Generally the ending of every chapter is a new twist or surprise which leaves
you wanting more, only to find out that George R.R. Martin has taken you to a
new character who will face different challenges. As the book progresses the
characters' journeys weaves around each other, creating the a coherent story.

There are now four books released in the series and my only criticism is the
length of time the author is taking to produce the next one. In the meantime,
HBO are creating a mini-series based on the books with a host of great actors
including Sean Bean. It promises to be fantastic and is due out next year.

That series is my Everest as I embark on my writing career. It's fantastic to
have as an inspiration even if I never scale the heights.
My first novel Crimson Dream a Young Adult Fantasy, is released in February.

BLURB

Centuries ago, Deren's people fled to a hidden valley deep in the mountains
chased by the Domain, whose powerful Seers could not find them.

Deren’s safe world disintegrates when his vision foretells his sister’s death by
a Domain soldier. Deren can't defend Bennie because of his asthmatic attacks, so
he trains her in archery and prepares his people for war against their ancient
foe.

As the invasion advances, Bennie's mastery of the bow leads her along unexpected
paths. Although she hates killing, she must make hard choices. Her loved ones
will die if she doesn't help them.

Will Bennie’s encounter with an enemy prince prove the key to survival? Can
Deren overcome his physical weaknesses and the doubts of his own father to lead
his people?

With fate and overwhelming force stacked against them, it seems their best
efforts will be in vain.

EXCERPT
Deren tried to get up to help Oso and Bennie and fell onto his back. He began to
gasp, his breath labouring through his lungs, fighting for every mouthful. He
took deep sucking drags of air, clutching his neck with his hands. His own lungs
were drowning him, refusing to breathe. He looked into the sky, thinking he
would die. Although it was only twilight, a ghostly moon peeked over the trees.

Whistling noises crept up and down his throat. He prayed to the Goddess of the
Moon. Yenara, help me. Please, don't let me die. Bennie needs me. Please.
A face swam across his vision. "Deren, are you okay?" the face asked. "Deren,
try to calm yourself."
The voice was laden with worry. A hand touched the side of his face. Warm drops
landed on his forehead. "Don't give up on me," the voice said in a fierce
whisper.

Welcome, Sara Benfit

1: Thank you so much for being here, Sara. First up is the obligatory question. When did you first begin writing?

I started writing seriously about five years ago when I set all the excuses I had aside, and made writing one of my priorities. I’ve always had that urge to write stories in the back of my mind, but told myself it would be a waste of my time; that I had children to raise, housework to do, and that nobody would understand my dream to write.

2: What inspired you to write?

I’ve been a voracious reader of all genres since childhood, and the more I read, the more I wished that someday, I could write a story that would draw a reader in, and move them, as many authors have done to me.

3: What do you like the most and least about writing?

I really enjoy the research, learning things about our world, and our history that I didn’t know before. And of course I love the actual writing, especially when I get into a good scene. The thing I least like about writing...commas, definitely commas.

4: What do you for fun and relaxation when not writing?

Well reading is top on my list, but gabbing with my family is right up there. Our three young adult children are all so varied in their own aspirations and talents, that I enjoy listening to their ideas, and about their daily adventures. The funny thing is, my children all have a much better sense of humor than I had at their age, and they can make me laugh. Which is exactly what I need on a daily basis. I also love to travel, but now that I’m writing all the time, I will have to settle for traveling through my characters. We do love to camp, and we get away a couple times a year to the beach or the other side of Mt. Hood.

5: Which authors do you like to read?

There are sooo many, but Dean Koontz and Stephen King are the two authors I cut my young adult teeth on, and I still read their work. I discovered romance later than most, and it wasn’t sweet romance, Tami Hoag is one of my idols, as well as Nora Roberts and Diana Gabaldon. I also love adventure/medical/science novels, and will dearly miss Michael Chricton and his work. Other authors include Ann Hoffman, Ann Rice, Lisa Jackson, Linda Howard, Tess Garrettsen, Sandra Brown, Catherine Delors, and recently Ted Dekker. There are many others whom I’ve not mentioned, and whom I would like to branch out and read.

6: What’s the one thing you’d most like people to know about you?

That I’m approachable. I have vowed to never forget, that all of us were newbies at some point in our lives, whether a new mother (motherhood can be so hard at times), or a new registered nurse (full of knowledge and ideals), or a new writer/author. It is our duty, for those of us who have been there, done that, to guide and mentor the up and coming...

7: Tell me about your current novel, where I can find it and your website/blog.

My debut novel, The Lycan Moon will be released from Muse It Up e-publishing, April 2011. It is about a cursed werewolf from seventeenth century Europe, whose quiet life is upended when a Seattle columnist comes to his town looking for a legendary, and immortal werewolf. The columnist is really a witch who believes she’s been chosen to end the poor guy’s curse. There is of course all sorts of chemistry, and the sparks literally fly when they collide.

My website is: http://www.sdurham.org/

8: Do you have any tips for aspiring authors?

Read books in the genre you’d like to write. Write at first without regard for grammar and polishing, just get the story and emotions down on paper. The writing flaws will be smoothed out and realized with each revision, don’t be afraid of ‘slashing and burning’, if a scene doesn’t add to the story and move it along, then put it in your deleted scenes file. The polishing will come (of course before you submit it to an agent or editor). Also join a writing group, whether local or on-line. The critiques and knowledge you will gain from others, is invaluable. Oh and don’t forget the yearly Online Muse Conference, it’s in October, it’s online, and it’s free!

9: Do you base your characters on real-life people?

No not really, I suppose there are composites of types of people in my stories, but I generally go out of my way to not emulate anyone I know, or have met.

10: Where do you get your ideas and what inspired you to write this book?

Angels, ghosts, demons, witches, and other paranormal aspects, in a story which is grounded in our modern day, fascinate me. The idea of something beyond our understanding intersecting with our mundane lives is what drives my stories. And did I mention, I gotta have some romance too.

Sitting on my bookshelf all these years is a book on werewolves, by Sabine Baring-Gould, which my father gave me when I was younger. I guess I always had a werewolf story in the back of my mind because of that book. And the witch in this story, was inspired by the horrific accounts of the European witch trials which occurred in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

11: What are you currently working on?

I’m revising the first novel I ever wrote, about angels and demons, and working on the world building and outline of my third novel about a harpist. I also am itching to start researching for a sequel to The Lycan Moon.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

I work full time as a registered nurse in my alternate life, with a background in Emergency Room nursing. I love what I do, but I have to admit, now that writing has its hooks in me, I would like to dedicate more time to it.

Thank you so much Roseanne for having me today! You’re my first interview!

Excerpt: The Lycan Moon-Unedited

Sitting in the back office of his charter shop, Calen scrolled through the Seattle Times archives while nursing a beer. Rick had gone home to his houseboat on Young’s Bay hours ago, and Noah had retired to his upstairs apartment. Noah enjoyed a quiet life these days, having been a coast guardsman for thirty years of his life, ‘back in the day’. Other than the occasional date with Mildred Swenson, he spent most evenings, reading mystery and adventure novels.

Calen however, had been too restless to go home. He needed to find out more about the lovely, and compelling Dana Pierce. He’d been reading through her weekly health columns for two hours now. Articles, on herbs, acupuncture, foods, environmental toxins, vitamins, imagery, and healing, using ‘laying on hands’ technique, were combined with commentaries on the latest therapies in traditional medicine, and with it the controversies, pertaining to health. She wrote with a blend of humor and personal caring that Calen was sure appealed to a large audience.

He saw that she was going to be a guest speaker at a Seattle Times-Sorrell Fundraiser for Foster Kids next week, and he wondered for the hundredth time that day, what it would take to distract the woman from her current quest.

Reading her written word had conjured up an unwelcome vision of the woman he’d met, although informally, that afternoon. Well he hadn’t really introduced himself, and in fact, he was quite sure he couldn’t have been more rude. But when he’d laid eyes on her...he’d had to rely on good old anger, to override the other sensations she had stirred up within him.

Without a doubt, he’d been rocked by that face. Velvet cream skin, adorned naturally with full generous lips that had looked soft as rose petals, and eyes that reminded him of green jasper.

Her almond shaped eyes had at first, registered surprise, then defiance, when he’d gotten in close. Her face framed by messy short raven hair which barely brushed her jawline, and on her chin he’d noted a ghost of a cleft which he’d wanted to taste right then and there.

No, he still couldn’t account for his lack of civil behavior toward the woman, except that he’d been too busy battling the overwhelming scent of her. It had been like an aphrodisiac of smell.

And combined with her beauty, it had taken everything he’d had, not to grab her as she’d brushed past him in her haste to leave the restaurant.

After lunch, Rick and he had gone out on an afternoon run. Though the sea air had cleared his senses, he’d still had difficulty getting her face out of his mind. And the ‘legend’ she’d spoken of, well now that was something else again. The last thing he wanted, was her snooping around resurrecting painful memories. Unfortunately though, he’d seen the determination in her intelligent eyes, and knew she wouldn’t be deterred easily.

That afternoon, he’d casually found out from Shauna Hansen at Astoria Realty where Ms. Pierce was staying. A little beach bungalow just across the bay in Warrenton.

He was going to have to put a clamp on his primal response to the woman however, if he was going to keep an eye on her.

Then there was the other problem which had been weighing on him since last night, the murdered woman in Neah-Kah-Nie forest, and the ‘thing’, he’d tracked and lost. He’d been fortunate at first, finding the beast’s trail again south of the sheer drop off, but when he’d backtracked down and around the rocks below to catch the scent again, he’d been unsuccessful. The worst part about it however, was that he couldn’t tell Elias the truth. He’d have to lie to his friend, and go along with the black bear theory.

The niggling in his brain, that trouble was just beginning, merely added to the dread that his own history, a history he’d painstakingly erased over the decades, was about to resurface like a corpse in a flooded graveyard.

Welcome MUSE AUTHORS

For the month of September, I'm featuring authors from MuseItUp Publishing.

First, let me tell you a bit about Lea Schizas of MuseItUp Publishing. Lea started this company for a variety of reasons. First, it's always been part of her plan.  Lea is known for helping writers and this is just another reflection of that. Does this mean an automatic acceptance for writers who know her or ‘of’ her? No. What it does mean is that each rejection will have the editors’ assessments to help the writer better understand why it was rejected, and then invite them to resubmit if they are willing to rework the areas they found weak or lacking. This helps writers because as a writer herself, Leaknows how it puzzled her to see the rejection but unsure the answer to ‘why?’ Believe me, I know not everything gets accepted. Although I have two novels and three novellas accepted, I've also received two rejections. One I've fixed and resubmitted and waiting to hear and the other still needs work.

Now a bit about the company -  MuseItUp Publishing is a small Canadian e-press specializing in high-quality e-books in the following genre -:mystery, thrillers, paranormal, fantasy, romance, horror, dark fiction, sci-fi, and young adult. And for the more adult theme - The erotica section will be hosted on its own site: MuseItHOT!
